Research on urban economics and labor markets

Dr. Chuanyong Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Public Economics and Social Policy, School of International and Public Affairs, at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His main research interests include urban economics, housing economics, and the impact of the new economy on the labor market.

He received his Ph.D. in Economics from East China Normal University in 2012. He then worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the School of Economics, Fudan University, from September 2012 to June 2014. From July 2014 to March 2018, he served as an Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor at the Institute of Urban Development, East China Normal University, where he conducted teaching and research in urban economics. From October 2024 to September 2025, he was a visiting scholar at Harvard CLJE and the NBER.

Dr. Zhang has published more than 20 papers in urban and housing studies and has received three research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He is currently collaborating with Professor Richard Freeman on research concerning trends in working hours and their broader impacts.
