ABOUT HAMILTON NOLAN

Nolan has been a labor journalist and activist for the last two decades. A majority of his early career was spent at Gawker, where he covered topics such as labor organizing and the intersection of politics and inequality. These days, Nolan’s work appears in In These Times, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Defector, and on his popular Substack, How Things Work. A defining voice in labor journalism, Nolan helped to organize the online media industry and his accolades include the Writers Guild of America’s Richard B. Jablow Award for Devoted Service to the Guild. Now, he has written a book on America’s labor movement and the influential figures that shaped it, called The Hammer: Power, Inequality, and the Struggle for the Soul of Labor.
